Mazda 6: Tradition Revered. Tradition Defied.
2014 Mazda 6 – The Art of Exhilaration | Defy Convention | Mazda
For all the decrying and denouncement, there is something to be said for tradition. The long standing aspect of a practice, any practice no matter how archaic, lends to it a certain authority. A gravity. An undeniable pull of allegiance. An inexplicable reverence.
Tradition not only imparts authority, but also class.
Classical music may be “dying.” But it is no small indication that even today it is the hallmark choice of the elite. As dull and dreary as it may be to the commoner’s ear, even in a commoner the notion of classical music strikes an unbeknownst chord of…feeling. A feeling approaching a kind of awe.
It is a mark of grand beginnings and an unshakeable background that is associated with the tradition of classical music. A profound assimilation of technique and fervor contained in an instrument—strings, wind or otherwise—and played out as per the command of convention. Hardly worthy of adulation you may think. Convention is condemnation wrapped in the guise of complimentary caresses. Speak sweet words to the winged creature whilst trapping it in a cage.
Creativity confined is creativity defined by convention, some would say.
I would beg to differ. As I said, there is something to be said for convention. For tradition. For age-old ways. For time tested and true trails. If nothing else appeals to you—not the class that tradition generally insinuates—not the authority tradition comprises—not the loyalty it commands—willing or otherwise–one must acknowledge that tradition belies a great truth. The conventions we ingrain within ourselves are the springboards necessary to defy the inevitable gravitational pull of those very conventions. That is, the orbit cannot be broken if there is no orbit to break.
But you see, in order to defy convention, the orbit need not be broken. Not precisely. Just refined perhaps. Reconfigured. Redefined. Because the orbit is necessary to lend the object of that orbit an escape from its confinement. A car is, after all, just a car. Every car serves a certain equal purpose. To travel from point A to B. That, then, is the proverbial orbit. The very definition of a car. To break away from such an orbit would defy the purpose of breaking free from it, i.e. freedom. Hence, it is necessary to remain within the orbit in order to go beyond the orbit. Pay tribute to the orbit in order to achieve release it from its same old circuitous route. Adhere to convention in order to…you got it…defy it.
So classical music may be a classic example of convention and therefore constriction. But look out, for classical music contains a “grace and energy” that supersedes all convention. Likewise, look out, for the new Mazda 6 contains an “artistry and engineering” that supersedes that of cars before it and around it. It bears both “elegance and strength.” It may appear to be a car like any other car. But hardly so, for it is graceful yet energetic in its performance, fully functional yet has an artistic flair. Strong and yet elegant. That is, grace is not sacrificed for energy, nor artistry for technicality, nor elegance for strength. Much like classical music is the new Mazda 6. It exudes a subtle power that is seductive in its simultaneous strength and surrender–to the tradition that defines it.
It is unencumbered by its structural presence, its weighty car formation. It is above and beyond its physique. It is sublime in soul. It is the “soul of motion” manifested in vehicular formation. Raise the curtain to reveal the star: Its contours may be soft but their shape and purpose are precise. Its innards are graced with light rising and receding like a wave of revelation. Extraordinary is the soul of the Mazda 6. And beware for thy soul, oh driver, shall merge with the soul therein, for “man and machine” can become inextricably bound together the way a musician becomes bound with an instrument. One lends it the other its soul. And the two together complete the formation of the Sublime.
Tradition Revered. Tradition Defied. Mazda 6: Defy Convention.
Oh. And. At the end, the woman before whom the car comes to a halt. Who knew such power could succumb to the command of a woman. Not a seductress, not a sorceress. No. A regal woman. A woman cloaked in dignity and decorum. And yet, one who commands respect, power, and acquiescence. Who knew such power could succumb to the command of a woman? Certainly not tradition.
A regal, dignified woman in a position of power. Defined by decorum yet in defiance of tradition. The orbit must exist so that those who rebel against it may be revered. Once again. Establish convention in order to defy it.
